Moving home takes effort, time, and undoubtedly is a stressful task for everyone. Even for the best of planners, it can take a lot of time. Moving can be sometimes unpleasant and not necessarily easy for everyone but it does come with a positive outcome. There are so many easier ways to pack your belongings quickly and reduce the amount of work, making the moving and packing process a bit smoother for you. To make it a little easier, start collecting boxes at least a couple of months before your moving date. A smart approach is to gather all the supplies you need for your move before you start your packing. Here are our simple tips to packing for your move.
Gather all packing supplies required
Collect strong and different sized boxes to pack your belongings. Ensure you get durable boxes that can last and hold even heavier items. Consider gathering the following:
- Bubble wrap
- Boxes
- Scissors
- Padding supplies
- Wrapping sheets
- Labeling stickers
- Packaging tape
- Markers
Start Early
The earlier you start packing, the easier it will be. Start your packing a few months in advance of your move. It will be less stressful for everyone in the long run. For a 3-bedroom house, on average, it can take 3 to 4 full days of packing assuming there are no delays and you have everything that you need. Make sure to also pack up anything that you don’t need to use or that isn’t an essential item. These include:
- Attic items
- Kitchen ware that you don’t use
- Guest room items such as bedding, cushions, etc.
- Seasonal items
Declutter your home
Declutter your house and get rid of anything that you don’t use or need anymore. This will lighten your stress and there will be a lot less to pack up into boxes. Figure out what you would like to keep, toss, donate, or sell. These measures must be taken as there will be some household items that you no longer need or want. There would be no point in taking these items with you, clogging up the new home.
Invest in quality material boxes
Purchase some quality material boxes to pack your belongings. Durability and the cost will go a long way in the end. Reused boxes from a supermarket can compromise due to the wear and exposure of moisture. The last thing you would need is the box falling apart while trying to fill it with your items and moving it.
Pack room by room
Organise and pack room by room. Pack all your belongings from each room into boxes and label the box for which room it belongs to. This is the easiest way so there is no confusion when unloading the boxes into your new property. Also, remember to check the whole room in case you missed something!
Always use the right size boxes for your items
When you start packing you must pack to the right size boxes. If you have heavy items like books, they should go into a smaller box, whereas items like curtains, pillows, and bed linen should be placed into a larger box. The bigger boxes you have the harder they are to carry; you should always keep the box light.
Pack the boxes effectively and efficiently
It is important to compactly pack all your belongings into boxes. Do not leave any gaps or spaces as your items could move around too much. Fill in any gaps with clothing items or packing paper. Sometimes moving companies won’t move the boxes if they feel unbalanced or loosely packed.
Pack fragile items with care
Use packing paper and bubble wrap for more fragile items like glasses, bowls, plates, and china. Wrap plates with packing paper, then bundle 4 or 5 plates together with more paper. Bowls and cups can be placed inside one another. Any expensive valuables should be wrapped up with bubble wrap individually.
Pack plates vertically into the box
Never stack your plates on top of each other as this could cause breakages or cracks. It is recommended that you place them in on their side and fill the gaps with plenty of bubble wrap to stop them from moving around.
Label all your boxes by room
Label all your boxes by room for example: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, etc. Make sure to label the top, bottom, and sides of the boxes so you can easily identify the box location. This will also speed up the on and off-loading process. You could also buy coloured tape to label the boxes. If there are fragile items in the box, it is essential to label the box “fragile”.
Use packing tape
Use heavy-duty and strong packing tape to seal and secure your boxes. Packing tape is clear and very sticky tape which is ideal for sealing boxes. Use the tape 2 or 3 times over to ensure extra security and to support the weight so nothing will fall out. Most
removals companies will be able to offer expert advice here.
Leave your clothes on the hangers
There is a lot of work unhanging your clothing from the wardrobe and placing it into a bag. Simply roll and wrap them up on the hangers and put them into a large black sack. Once you are ready to rehang them into the wardrobe, this will then save you a lot of time.
Packing cables
Every household has multiple cables for TVs, radios, laptops, consoles, phones, etc. They all have their own power cable. Zip lock bags are ideal for holding your cables to keep them safe and so they do not get lost. Place them inside a box with the electrical items.
